I use speed dating in my German 2 class to practice past participles. It’s kind of like walking flash cards. It works quite well, but one problem I run into is that students don’t necessarily “date” all of the possible past participles if they just move around the room randomly. Do you have this problem, or are your classes small enough that it isn’t an issue?

She was eager to try a new strategy to engage her students and get them to interact with each other in English about academic content. In order to gather formative assessment data before the final exam, she needed them to use English to express their content understanding. Sara set up her classroom in a U-shape with half the students sitting on the inside of the U and half sitting on the outside facing each other. Because this was a test review, not an introductory activity, she strategically placed students with the same languages on the same side of the U, so they would not be paired during the activity.
See diagram. When I walked into the room to observe the structure in practice, the first question for partners to answer was on the screen at the front of the room. Sara asked students to first answer the question individually. The students were required to come to a consensus for the correct answer and explanation. Sara called on a pair after each discussion time to share their answers with the class and help them refine understanding or fill in any missing information.
After each question, the students sitting on the inside of the U moved to the next seat and had a new partner. They interacted well with each other and stayed in English throughout the class. In the following scripted exchanges during the biology speed dates, notice how students gain academic vocabulary, clarity, and specificity during their interactions.
Primary Source Speed Dating: Finding the document of your dreams
This is the first in a series of three posts about activities I usually do on the first days of class. The main objective is to get students speaking and assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as giving them an idea of what is expected of them for the rest of the year. Single men and women attend an event, usually in a bar or a club. During the event, they will have the opportunity to meet a series of potential partners.
As the term speed-dating suggests, they only have three minutes to impress each person before rotating to the next. In the classroom we do the same but eliminate the romantic part!

Additionally, too often the person leading the activity has not thought through the point of the activity and how it fits into the course. No one cares. In some ways, I think a bad icebreaker leaves the impression that the course will be unengaging and unimportant. Still, the ice-breaker is widely used because it is important. Spending all of our time on the first day of class merely reading through the syllabus, or worse, dismissing students early with no meaningful learning experience or connection to the course, is a missed opportunity.
So, it is my opinion that we should be looking for high quality ice-breakers that check many of the boxes that we hope to accomplish on the first day of class. This activity seems to work for me and my students are surprised by how much fun they have at it. A couple of things that this activity has going for it is that it is fast-paced and it touches on things that students are genuinely interested in and can easily share.
